We are thrilled to bring you today’s guest, Joe Connelly, who is the founder & CEO of Visana Health, a digital care program and app for women with endometriosis and other pelvic pain conditions. Joe started Visana after watching his mom suffer from endometriosis for 25 years. After working for Boston Scientific as a medical engineer Joe left his full time job to pursue this passion of his full time. In today’s conversation Joe shares his vivid recollection of his mother’s pain and his memories of her screaming in bed and throwing up because the pain of her menstrual cycle was so bad. His mother’s condition was undiagnosed for two decades during which time Joe believed that the monthly pain she suffered from was a normal thing that happened to all women.  His aunt and grandma also suffered from endometriosis.

Joe’s story and experience with his mom drove him to leave his job within the past year and pursue his passion full time to help women reduce the pain and suffering and be able to live normal lives.  Visana health’s goal and focus is to address the underlying root cause of the pain versus taking birth control and undergoing surgery, which only suppress the symptoms.

In our conversation Joe shares several lifestyle changes that you can make to address these symptoms, which can help anyone with unwanted menstrual discomfort, not just someone diagnosed with endometriosis.   Joe’s holistic platform focuses on four pillars, which include pelvic floor physical therapy, disease education, nutrition and cognitive behavior therapy; it also provides accountability for their clients.

Joe shares how many women have unnecessary surgeries including hysterectomies.  Visana Health empowers people to have access to underused resources, such as pelvic therapy, to improve the pain in women using clinically validated methods, what they can do on their own to reduce their pain.  We love how Visana Health takes a holistic view to improve quality of life of women, which we are firm believers in too.

I think it’s fair to say that most, if not all of us, know of someone who has had to miss work or other commitments because of their painful periods.

This new program that Joe has poured his heart and soul into is finally giving women all over the world hope and a clear path as to how they can reduce their symptoms and finally live pain free.  This episode is one that everyone will learn from, regardless of whether you or anyone you know suffers from endometriosis or other related conditions.  Joe shares some practical tips and tricks that someone can implement immediately, including which foods and supplements have bee proven to reduce menstrual pain.
